A dripping faucet is more than just an annoying sound. A single faucet dripping once per second can waste over 3,000 gallons of water a year, which shows up as a steadily climbing water bill even if nothing else in the house has changed. Most drips come down to a worn washer, O-ring, or cartridge inside the faucet, all of which are common wear items on fixtures that get used multiple times a day.
Before attempting any repair, shutting off the water supply at the valve under the sink, or at the main shutoff if there’s no local valve, is the first step. From there, a straightforward washer or cartridge swap is often enough to stop the leak. If the faucet is older, corroded, or the leak keeps coming back after a repair, replacing the fixture outright is usually the more reliable long-term fix.
